Phnom Banan is located in Banan Village, Kantea Pei Commune, Banan District, Battambang Province about 22 kilometers to the south of Battambang. Phnom Banan is also a unique historical site which contains Phnom Banan temple, an ancient temple that dates back to before Angkor. Phnom Banan temple is a rectangular temple built in the early 11th century with five towers, the central tower made of sandstone and the surrounding towers made of sandstone and laterite in pre-Angkor style. Besides, Phnom Banan also has a legend related to Neng Romsay Sok that stated this place is the sea. It seems to be related to the past of the Phnom Banan either. In this article we will show how this location becomes the marine? And what are the evidences that indicate this location as the marine?
Phnom Banan is a type of Limestone Mountain marked PLS that date back to the Permain Period (251 – 299 million years). Limestone is formed by accumulation of lime from sea creatures, snails, etc., using tens of thousands of years. We have found some evidence of marine fossils, such as:
Crinoids are marine animals that make up the class Crinoidea which it closes to the starfish and sea urchins, was also previously published on the AMS Khmer Cilization website. Crinoids we saw on Phnom Banan were buried in the rock. This means that they were born before the limestone, when the limestone was still in the ground. These Crinoids have survived to the present day, but only different species in Cambodia still exist.
Sea shell fossil? It looks like a sea shell that enclose on the surface of limestone. These sea shells belong to the Bivalve group namely small sea shell and clam. This group originated from the 1st era Paleozoic (542 – 252 million years), but was not very abundant, continuous to the 2nd era Mesozoic (252 – 65 million) and continues to the present. For this image, is it stick later when it is still at the sea? Unless there is further study and we now still have a limitation data.
Barnacle is a slow-moving species. Their bodies are covered with sharp shells at the end, they often ripen on the trees, some marine animals have hard shells sea, some ripen on rocks, and these species have survived until today, which can be seen in the rocks along the seafront. Through the existence of these species, it can be confirmed that they can live after this area became an island and rock?
Based on preliminary research by the team at Phnom Banan, we have encountered fewer amounts of marine fossils. However, we can first understand that the location of Phnom Banan is the sea marine in the past. But we do not know when the sea disappeared from that area? Therefore, we need to acknowledge the evidence and further research to better understand. In addition, this site now has ancient temple on the hilltop and is an important urban area from the ancient time to the present and is also an attractive tourist area.
