Ministry of Tourism Has Reviewed on the Implementation of Tourist Safety Measures, Online Training, and Newly Tourism Products Development in the Context of Covid-19

(Phnom Penh): The ministry of tourism held a meeting to view the implementation of tourist safety measures, online training and newly tourism products development in the context of Covid-19 through video-conference on the morning of June 30, 2021, under patronage of H.E. Dr. THONG Khon, Minister of Tourism and with participants:  Secretary of State, Undersecretary of State, Director General, Directors of the Institute, Deputy Director General, Directors of the Departments, and Director of the 25 Capital-Provincial Departments of Tourism.  

In the meeting focused mainly on the reviewing on the implementation of tourist safety measures at hotel business bases, guesthouses, restaurants, tourism resorts, tourism communities, domestic tour operators and waterway and land-road tourist transportation means at all 25 capital – provincial tourist destinations forwards at increasing the resilient of domestic tourists, and in readiness for receiving the international tourists in the upcoming time.  

The strength is based mainly on the creation of immunity in the communities (The Heard Immunity) through the encouraging for making vaccination available for all of citizens across the country, and the continuing to implement the measure of (3 Don’t, 3 Protection).

In particular, in terms of responsibilities in tourism, as well as community resilience, the strength of local tourism also depends on four key areas:

  1. Continuing to urge for the instruction and inspection on tourism business bases to participate in the implementation of tourist safety measures which were previously putted out by the ministry of tourism. The tourist safety measures formed in the aims to halt the spread of Covid-19, to maintain stability of businesses and to ensure the safety and security for tourism, in particular in the context, in which the adaptation to new normal life is now required. Please be noted that, as of 30 April 2021, the number of businesses, granted tourist safety label, were 3, 356 locations, equivalent to 51. 19% of total businesses.
  2. Resuming the works of online training and strengthening the converting of training at targets (training on both new staffs and on staffs who are receiving impacts posed by Covid-19). As of 22 June 2021, the number of staffs, who received online training, were 6, 489.
  3. Continuing the works of strengthening and supporting newly tourism products throughout the strengthening of skills and service quality at there. The ministry has currently seen  a shifting of new trend forward to community based-tourism, ecotourism and technology used – businesses (contactless), which in this context, the effort to manage those tourist destinations with a safety and standard based – quality is an utmost major matter, for instance, tourism community standard, standards of hiking, and trekking, act.
  4. Renewing domestic tourism promotion and raise publicly awareness to national and international tourists, in particular to all related institutions about ongoing implemented strategic plans of tourism which currently the ministry has already the Road-map on Cambodian Tourism’s Rehabilitation and Promotional Plan During and After Covid-19 Crisis and Siem Reap Provincial Tourism Development Master Plan 2021- 2035, and the continuing implementation of measure (3 don’t, 3 protection), as well as tourist safety measures.  

Minister Thong Khon informed the meeting that after the event of lock-down on the last April, the movement of domestic tourists has recovered, despite of being lower than the same period in 2020. As of June 2021, Cambodia received domestic tourists of over 2 million, decreased 62. 45%, compared to the same period in 2020.
