China Pledges to Open All Direct Flights with Cambodia and Encourages Chinese Tourists and Investors to Cambodia

(China): Wang Yi, State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China confirmed in front of Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia that China will help encourage the Chinese tourists and investors to come to Cambodia and consider reopening all direct flights between the two countries.

The Chinese friend’s confirmation came when the two ministers of foreign affairs met for the bilateral talk in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, People’s Republic of China, December 3-5, 2021, according to a press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

In addition, the Chinese diplomatic head also pledged to facilitate the return of Cambodian students to study in China. On economic cooperation, the two ministers of foreign affairs noted satisfaction with the progress of the bilateral trade during the outbreak of the Covid-19 disease.

The two sides conveyed congratulation for taking effect the Cambodia – China Free Trade Agreement and Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement in early next year and committed to taking most benefits from the above two agreements to boost the bilateral trade between the two countries to $10 billion by 2023.  

Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn expressed thank for Chinese friend’s commitment to increasing further import of Cambodian agricultural products into Chinese markets. Wang Yi reaffirmed China’s supports for infrastructural development projects and other projects, as well as Cambodia’s Post–Covid-19 economic recovery efforts.

Please be informed that, for 10 months of 2021, the Cambodia – China bilateral trade volume reached up to $8931 million, increased by 38.56%, compared to the same period in 2020. In which Cambodia’s export volumes to China accounted for approximately $1, 222 million, increased by 49%, compared to the same period in 2020. Separately, the volumes of imports from China to Cambodia accounted for $7, 709 million, increased by 37%, compared to the same period in 2020.

Upon prediction of the Council for Development of Cambodia (CDC), as of October 2021, Chinese investors invested in Cambodia were approximately $27 billion.
