(Indonesia): Cambodia discussed with World Travel and Tourism Council and attracted technical assistance, the resumption of cooperation in order to support the national tourism rehabilitation, and the help in promoting Cambodian tourism to the international markets as well.
The promise of support was made through a talk between His Excellency Thong Khon, Minister of Tourism, and Mrs. Julia Simpson, Chairwoman and Executive Director of the World Travel and Tourism Council on the occasion that His Excellency Minister Thong Khon attended the G20 Tourism Ministerial Meeting and World Tourism Day 2022 on September 27, 2022, Bali, Indonesia.
On that occasion, the two sides rose about the previous cooperation on tourism. According to the good cooperation and in line with Cambodia’s request, the President of the World Travel and Tourism Council pledged to provide technical assistance in helping the Tourism Satellite Account in order to measure the economic advantages of tourism in Cambodia. Mrs. President Julia Simpson pledged support to the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism for the use of the Hotel Sustainability Basics.
In addition, the World Travel and Tourism Council will help promote Cambodian tourism to European and other major markets and provide cooperation on the development of digital tourism and digital literacy.
Mrs. President of the World Travel and Tourism Council also shared the experience and importance of community-based tourism development and ecotourism, especially in Covid -19, where tourism trends have significantly increased.
Mrs. Julia Simpson noted the tourism sector’s major contribution to the Cambodian economy. Based on a report by the World Travel and Tourism Council, Cambodia’s tourism and travel sector before the Covid-19 crisis in 2019 contributed over 25% to gross domestic product (GDP).
Minister Thong Khon also informed the World Travel and Tourism Council about the achievements of efforts of the Cambodian Royal Government indicating that, in the previous time, the Cambodian Royal Government – particularly under the direct pointing out of Samdech Techo HUN SEN, Prime Minister in considering the vaccination as a key strategy to ensure the community immunity, the Cambodian has become one of the leading countries in the world, which reopens the country, especially the re-launch of economic and social activities and opening up the country to receive fully vaccinated tourists from the end of 2021 onwards.
Minister continued that in the process of restoring and developing Cambodia’s tourism sector, the Ministry of Tourism is actively cooperating with the private sector and stakeholders to implement the roadmap on the restoration and promotion of Cambodia’s tourism sector during and after the Covid-19 crisis 2020-2025.
Minister Thong Khon confirmed to the World Travel and Tourism Council that in the first nine months of 2022, international tourists visiting Cambodia could reach up to 1.25 million, an increase of 850% compared to the same period in 2021.
