H.E Minister of Tourism Thong Khon requests all stakeholders to promote the usage domestic products in tourism industry

(Phnom Penh): Under the framework of Trade Capacity Building Program in tourism (TCBP), the Ministry of Tourism, National Committee for Clean City Assessment, in cooperation with Agency French for Development (AFD) and United Nations in charge of Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Mr. Thong Khon, Minister of the Ministry of Tourism, made request all relevant stakeholders to help promoting the usage of domestic products in tourism industry. Such request of the Minister Thong Khon was made on 28 March 2019, within time he was invited to be presided over in a workshop on “Value Chain and Increasing Usage Domestic Products in Tourism”, at Green Palace Hotel, with the participation from representatives of relevant ministries – institutions, sub – national administration, private sector in tourism sector, domestic producers, development partners, national and international tourists. Within that occasion, Mr. the minister expressed that the workshop, to be held this morning, was conducted in accordance with highly introducing recommendation of Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Cambodian Prime Minister who regarded “tourism sector is on the site exportation” by this field has played very importance role in contributing to increase growth, domestic product supplying, for instance fishes, meat, vegetable, fruits, furniture, and handicraft products, and other domestic products, produced by farmers, craftsmen and women, and our Khmer farmers. While Cambodian tourism sector has brought about over USD 4 billion to national economic income on the last 2018, we also need to consider over economic leakages in tourism by about 25% of tourism income has been leaked out that mostly due to products importation from oversea, such as vegetable, fruits, meat, wines, furniture, handicraft tools; act, in order to support sharply growth of tourism development in Cambodia. In this regard, Mr. Thong Khon set direction by having to try to cut off the rate of leakages to be further at least 10% ( to be at 15%, as general rate of the any tourist destination nation). Mr. Minister showcased if we can reduce about 10% of leakages in addition, we will are able to gain profit of USD 400 million from exportation, our products are for serving tourism industry. In this context, Mr. Minister requested to have green belt prepared at the main tourist destinations within the Kingdom of Cambodia throughout planting crops, animal feeding, aquaculture, handicraft activity promotion, small and medium enterprises to ensure domestic product supplying for tourism industry, in particular at resorts, hotels, and any restaurant. Along with this, private sectors in tourism need to continue supporting and using domestic products to be maximize; while domestic producers have been improving productivity, both quantity aspect and quality aspect with competitive price. The creation of intermediary is also importance in playing role as brokers between supplying sides and demanding sides by being facilitators for the both sides. In this sense, the promotion of domestic product usage in tourism industry has responded to demand growth via growth of international tourist arrivals, and the growth of travelling of inbound tourists are really strategic important which requires the participation from all stakeholders, both state, private sector, and development partners. Should be noted that in the workshop, there are experience, strategies, and best practices sharing of any nation in linking value chain of domestic production (agriculture and handicraft), together with usage in tourism industry along with assessment within the context of Cambodia throughout showing the results of studying mission in Siem Reap province by international experts of UNIDO, as well as showing platform, strategies, supporting actions, challenges, and opportunities in promoting value chain of domestic products by speakers who are invited from state institutions and private sectors
