Cambodia to Host the 19th Meeting of ASEAN Task Force on CODEX (ATFC) in Siem Reap Discussing on Food Standard
(Siem Reap): The 19th Meeting of the ASEAN Task Force on Codex was held 3 days from 19th – 21st June 2019, at the Apsara Palace and Conference Center hotel, Siem Reap town. Within the meeting, the 7 ASEAN member nations attended and representatives from relevant institutions in Cambodia, including: Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Ministry of Health, and Ministry of Industry and Handicrafts. Cambodia, which consists a Cam – control Department of the Ministry of Commerce regarded as national Codex interaction point, hosted the 19th Meeting of the ASEAN Task Force on Codex. Mr. Pann Oun, Vice director general of Cam-control Department, and chairs of ASEAN meeting on occasion of opening meeting, stated that the ASEAN good standard is an standard or reference for the ASEAN member nations take to implement; but volunteering not compulsory. Whenever any ASEAN nation has no national standards on any menu, those nations are able to take ASEAN standard, or Codex standard to carry out. Mr. Pann Oun expressed that International Codex Food Standard as well as ASEAN Food Standard is the driving tool in food transaction in the world with equity and accuracy within the region as members of World Trade Organization as well as members of ASEAN community. Please note that the agendas, which ASEAN codex Task Force opened to discuss, include 7 main points in terms of progress reports of the 18th ASEAN Codex Meeting on Seeking ASEAN Consensus stance consisted in a draft and new request in Codex work. The meeting is also discussed on a wide range of issues, raised by member nations, the key points which will be raised to discuss are:
1. Discuss on a draft of the some food standards in line with factors of quality, ingredients, main substance and additional substance in foods, remedy for animal medicine, and labeling, etc.;
2. Review new works, requested by ASEAN Codex members in the preparation of food standards;
3. Continue reviewing on procedures in the preparation of a common stance of ASEAN in response to international Codex works;
Please inform that Codex is a combination of international food experts, established in 1963, named “Codex Alimentarius”, and participated by Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Health Organization (WTO), with total 188 participant countries, in which Cambodia became a member in 1974. Particularly, within ASEAN framework, the Codex task force had been established in 2001 with the aims at discussing the possibility in standard harmonization and technical regulations for ASEAN nations to utilize international Condex standard as core.
